We will have ELEVEN different writing competitions to dip your ink and creative juices into. Come battle out your writing prowess from 12:50 – 4:10 PM! Winners will be announced at 4:20 PM.

Young Writers Con Cosplay

COSPLAY your favorite author or character in your favorite novel! This is your time to make your alternative life a reality. Come dressed to win and strut your cosplaying skills around the conference hall. Winners will be announced at 4:20 PM. 

Get To Know You Activities – Get to know other young writers from around the area. While walking around in your fancy garb, stay entertained with Ice Breaker Bingo, Caption This, The Endless Story, Scavenger Hunt, and a photo booth, so you can have lasting memories of this event! For each activity you participate in, you will receive TWO raffle tickets. We will have fabulous prizes for those whose raffle ticket is drawn!!! Community Book Aficionados – Browse the Barbara Bush Library table and Copperfield Books table. See what is new in the area of literature. They will also be handing out TWO raffle tickets to every attendee who visits them.

Writing Competitions

IN 2024, WE HAVE ELEVEN WRITING COMPETITIONS AND TWO DIVISIONS.

We listened to your requests for more writing competitions! This also means more prizes for you. We will have two divisions for each competition. One for students in grades 7 – 9, and one for students in grades 10 – 12. This will make the competitions more fair this year. We will have a closing ceremony at 4:20 PM where all winners will be announced.

Pre-written Poetry: bring poetry in to be judged. It must be written before coming to the convention. You are welcome to bring in your poetry written for the Scholastics Writing Competition.

Pre-written Short Story: bring in a short story to be judged. It must be written before coming to the convention. You are welcome to bring in your short story written for the Scholastics Writing Competition.

Black Out Poetry: Create poetry at the convention by blacking out words on a page of text. Turn a tired novel into a fresh piece of poetic genius.

Poetry on the Spot: Create poetry at the convention. The only requirement for this poem is that you compose it at the convention.

Magnetic Poetry: Create poetry at the convention. Your poetic ideas will flow from our magnetic poetry strips. Let’s see who is wickedly witty!

Fantasy: Create this flash fiction based on the fantasy genre. Enjoy creating new worlds and creatures as you entertain us with clever plots. It must be written at the convention.

Concoct a Comic: You will combine wit and artistry to create an engaging comic. It must be crafted at the convention.

Hatch a Character: Develop an authentic character filled with flaws and struggles. You will develop a single scene that displays your iconic character at his/ her most vulnerable, passionate, or disgraceful moment, revealing their true self. It must be written at the convention.

Romance: Create this flash fiction based on the romance genre. Titillate us with breathtaking romantic heroes and villains.  It must be written at the convention. 

Mystery: Keep us on edge as you build up suspense with this flash fiction that focuses on the mystery genre. It must be written at the convention.

Conflict: Display your creative genius by focusing your flash fiction on the conflicts your protagonist continues to face. Your plot should bring to life the plot through exquisite conflict techniques. It must be written at the convention.
